Brooklyn Rider
Friday, September 30, 2011 8:00 PM, Church of the Good Shepherd
“Musical imagination may be ineffable, but you recognize it when you hear it, and Brooklyn Rider, a string quartet that has been associated with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project, has it in spades.
– Washington Post
Born out of a desire to use the rich medium of the string quartet as a vehicle for communication across a large cross section of history and geography, Brooklyn Rider is equally devoted to the interpretation of existing quartet literature and to the creation of new works. The musicians have worked with such composers as Derek Bermel, Lisa Bielawa, Ljova, Philip Glass, Osvaldo Golijov, Jenny Scheinman and Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, and they also regularly perform pieces written or arranged by members of the group. Much of Brooklyn Rider’s desire to extend the borders of conventional string quartet programming has come from their longstanding participation in Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble.

Featured Local Artist: Eileen Corse
Sweet Summer, 30x30 oil
A self-taught artist, in 1999, Eileen Corse began what would be her future art career with nine months of drawing instruction by Jenny Chi; at that time, a professor at the University of North Florida, and now Professor of Art at Eastern Illinois University. With the solid foundation in drawing Jenny was able to give her, she started painting and has been painting ever since.
After only painting a year, a local fine art gallery noticed her work and began exhibiting and selling her paintings. Two other galleries began exhibiting and selling her paintings. And, by April 2004, she was selected to participate in Jacksonville’s premier emerging artists showcase, Art After Dark. Eileen Corse has been featured in many juried and local group shows, as well as articles in local newspapers and magazines.
Now, in 2010, Eileen is the happy owner of a fine art gallery and art school, Corse Gallery & Atelier. The gallery, in just two short years, has secured a national reputation as a leader among art galleries of today. We represent artists from around the country. The gallery is also host to three- to five-day workshops given by some of the most gifted and talented artists of our time. Students come from all over the world to attend these workshops, some from as far away as Trinidad. To view more of Eileen’s work, visit www.corsegalleryatelier.com.
