Creativity born of necessity marked the beginning of Billie McCray’s artistic journey. As a child growing up poor in Tuskegee, Alabama, she would take her standard white gym shoes and recreate them into colorful, hand-painted sandals. The love of textiles, unique design details and found objects married with a curiosity of other cultures have given birth to an artist who mixes these elements to form works of art. Her creations range from handmade dolls with antique button eyes to teddy bears made from vintage chenille bedspreads, to eco-wallhangings that combine all of her favorite things.

Besides numerous local shows he has maintained an active role as a show juror, state art grants panelist, and as an officer in the Florida Printmakers Society. Whether in naturalistic life drawings and paintings or in more abstracted styles, an interest in organic forms has always permeated his work. A native of California, Miguel Sanchez arrived in Jacksonville in 2001 after living in South America since 1976. He graduated in May 2004 with a B.F.A. in Painting from Jacksonville University. A major influence in the development of his artistic style has been the jungle environments of Suriname and the Brazilian Amazon region. Much of his early art depicts abstract landscapes with repetitive patterns and bold slashes or swaths of color as if looking down at the jungle. Both the color and design of the Native Amerindians and Bushnegroes of the region have had a major impact on his combinations of color and shape. His feelings are expressed more through the use of color than design and his paintings are generally large in size.
